Legend’s Ultimate Indica

Legend’s Ultimate Indica, often simply called LUI, is another offering from Spice of Life, a Canadian seed company owned and operated by Breeder Steve. The three_little_birds are fairly well known for growing this strain, it was the centerpiece of a 2003-2004 “grow along” thread at Cannabis World, where it became that site’s most viewed grow thread.

With that in mind, we’ll post the strain’s description from Legend’s seeds, and then return to give a few more details from our own experience with LUI.

The “LegendsUltimate Indica” is a combination of our two most favorite indica’s. This F1 hybrid was mothered by a previously unreleased Ortega plant from California. The Ortega’s heavy indica traits shone through with its’ tight buds and extremely stoney finish. The father, a second backcross Sweet Tooth from Spice of Life Seeds, adds the sweet and pungent flavor Breeder Steve strains are know for. She is a heavy yielder that won’t disappoint.

Yield Indoors: 7-8 weeks
Harvest Outdoors: Late Sept.

Our first taste of Legend’s Ultimate Indica came from the Vancouver Compassion Club. That sample was heavy and quite stony, a combination that works pretty well for our medicinal needs (chronic pain, arthritis, insomnia). After sampling a few grams of LUI from the Compassion Club, we decided that it was a strain we needed to try in our own medicinal herb garden, and with the LUI thread now preserved for posterity, we can say the rest is history.

LUI is certainly good medicine if you can find the correct phenotype, with the Ortega dominant plants being preferred to those who expressed more of their father’s Sweet Tooth lineage. Most plants were probably somewhere in the range of 7 or 8 on a scale of 1 to 10 in potency, with a few special examples being significantly more powerful than their siblings. In our minds, it’s probably best to plan on working with at least 10-15 plants at once in order to be able to select one or two keepers.

Flowering times given in the strain description are pretty accurate. In our minds, 8-9 weeks would probably be more along the lines of our experience for flowering time, but we’d also admit to preferring a little heavier medicinal effect, so we perhaps let our plants go a little longer than most.

In terms of flavor, we were underwhelmed by LUI. There was a certain generic sweetness in the flavor of the LUI’s we grew, and it seemed there were also some significant hints of citrus flavor as well. While it’s not outstanding , it’s certainly not objectionable either, so we’d have to say that at it’s worst, LUI is at least average in taste.

Strains with Sweet Tooth in their lineage are prone to mold if grown in wet conditions, and we’ve heard that LUI is no exception to that trend. When grown indoors under controlled climate conditions, it’s not a problem at all, at least that was our experience. Your mileage may vary!

Here’s an excerpt about LUI from THE STRAINS OF TOMORROW, by Jorge Cervantes, which originally appeared in High Times in the summer of 2003. It’s not a lot different from what’s already been said, but I’ll add it for posterity.

    LEGENDS ULTIMATE INDICA/Legends Seeds
Legends Ultimate Indica was developed by Breeder Steve from Spice of Life Seeds. He used an Ortega female, an extremely dense, short Northern California Afghani that grows into one large pinecone-like cola, and mated her with a second Sweet Tooth backcross. LUI has a slightly lemony and strongly hash-like flavor. Joints produce thick, dense smoke and are hard to keep lit. The very sedative couch-lock buzz has been verified by patients as a great pain reliever. LUI also makes “full melt” hash that should be sold in pharmacies! It produces a bush of dense, ripe buds after eight weeks of flowering indoors, and finishes in late September outdoors. Find out more about this very stoney strain at legendsseeds.com.
