Rollin’ W/ Ricky

Here at the Cannabis Chronicles our primary focus isn’t on covering sports stoners, or cannabis celebrities, those kinda folks seem to get plenty of attention on their own without our help. However, when a good story jumps up in our face, we can’t always resist.

For instance, when Michael Vick recently tested positive for marijuana, he earned a quietly humorous mention here (drug trafficking hurts wildlife). Now seeing that Rickey Williams has applied for reinstatement to the NFL, we knew he’d earned an entire posting of his own.

Here’s a fellow WordPress blogger’s post to get things . . . kicked off.

Ricky Williams is back, and ready to SMOKE the competition!

You read the headline, so you already know what’s going on here. Ricky Williams applied for reinstatement to the NFL. As you may remember, Williams was suspended in April of 2006 after violating the league’s drug policy for the fourth time. On top of that, he again tested positive for marijuana this past April, which ensured his delay would be longer.

Ricky’s team, the Dolphins, are currently 0-4, after yesterday’s loss to the Raiders (where former Dolphins QB Daunte Culpepper decided to score 5 touchdowns)…the Dolphins could possibly use the help, although Ronnie Brown seems to be a pretty capable running back, and more importantly, Dolphins coach Cam Cameron hasn’t stated if he even wants Ricky back.

For Ricky’s sake, I want him to come back and do well. I know he’s getting old, but I still think/hope that he has some good years ahead of him. There will always be room for a running back of his present caliber on an NFL team; someone just needs to take a chance.

ESPN: Agent says Williams applies for reinstatement into the NFL

Telling the whole Ricky Williams saga is far beyond the scope of what we’d like to take on here at the Cannabis Chronicles, but it does seem fair to give our readers who don’t follow the NFL an opportunity to play catch up. Here’s an excerpt from ESPN’s coverage of Williams testing positive earlier this year. rickywilliams.jpg

“Due to the recent reports about me failing a drug test, I feel it is appropriate for me to issue this statement. Last month, following a psychological evaluation requested by the NFL, we — the psychiatrist and I — came to the realization that there were a few things I needed to iron out about myself in order to make my return to the NFL as successful as possible.

“I am an honest, God-fearing man who is intensely dedicated to being the best person I can be on and off the football field. There is no need to smear my name or to defame my character for the sake of news. When the time is right, God willing, I will be back on the field scoring touchdowns for whatever team is fortunate enough to believe in me.”

The doctors also recommended that Williams not be allowed to apply for reinstatement until September, sources said. The commissioner usually adheres to the advice of the medical advisers under the substance abuse policy.

“Falling off the wagon is part of rehab,” a source said. “Based on the medical evidence in Ricky’s case, the doctors say it’s too early to come back. He had the positive test last month. Remember, he’s been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder — that’s a real disease and a good percentage of those folks self-medicate with substances like marijuana, often at the moment they are about to have a high level of social interaction.”
